International Men's Day is a day dedicated to celebrating the contributions and achievements of men across the globe as well as a global awareness day for many issues that men face, including parental alienation, abuse, homelessness, suicide, and violence.

In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the need to address the mental health challenges faced by men. This Men's Day in 2023, we take a closer look at the importance of mental health awareness and support for men.

Historically, men have been expected to conform to societal norms of stoicism, strength, and emotional restraint. This expectation often discourages men from seeking help for mental health issues or even discussing their mental health struggles/issues with another person, leading to a significant underreporting of their struggles. As a result, many men suffer in silence, facing a range of mental health issues including depression, anxiety, and even suicide. According to the World Health Organization, globally, men are nearly twice as likely to die by suicide as women and nearly 1 in 10 men experience anxiety or depression daily.

This stark reality highlights the urgent need for increased awareness and support for men's mental health.

This Men's Day, it is imperative to challenge stereotypes and promote open conversations about mental health. Encouraging men to talk about their feelings, seek support, and access professional help when needed is crucial. Additionally, fostering safe spaces for men to share their experiences can go a long way in breaking down the stigma surrounding men's mental health.

A holistic approach to mental health includes not only seeking professional support but also taking care of one's physical, emotional, and social well-being. Encouraging activities like exercise, meditation, and engaging in meaningful social connections can significantly contribute to a man's overall mental well-being.

On International Men's Day 2023, let us reaffirm our commitment to supporting men's mental health. By breaking down stereotypes, encouraging open conversations, and providing accessible resources, we can create a world where men feel empowered to seek help when they need it. Together, we can work towards a future where mental health is prioritized for everyone, regardless of gender.
